Counseling Philosophy

To help a child, adult, family, or couple get from point A to point B.
In other words, from where you are now to where you want to be. Counseling takes a person through a process of discussion and self exploration, problem solving, and homework to create positive, sustainable, and desired change.
In my practice I use what are called 'evidence based treatments' or treatments that research has shown are most effective. For example, my practice is based on cognitive therapy and solution-focused therapy, both of which have been shown to be effective in treating a variety of challenges and disorders.
In cognitive therapy the client and the counselor work together to:
  • Identify the problem(s)
  • Problem solve
  • Find solutions that create positive, sustainable, and desired change
Cognitive therapy is a process of helping clients to:
  • Change their thinking
  • Change their behavior
  • Change their emotional response to life situations
Solution-focused therapy is goal directed and works towards those things that are going well. It is 'solution-focused' rather than problem solving.

When looking for a counselor for yourself, friend, or a family member I feel it is important to 'shop around.' Your mental health care is as important as your physical health care and you should make a wise and informed decision.  Call several different counselors and ask what their individual philosophy is to ensure there is a good fit between the client and the counselor!
